Welcome

the Liberian Community of South Australia (LICOSA)

Our Mission and Vision

Established in 2002, LICOSA was founded with the purpose of preserving our national identity and celebrating our rich cultural values. Initially, the community comprised only 12 adults and 7 children, but we recognized a strong potential for growth within the Liberian population in South Australia.

Historical Context

Many Liberians have arrived in South Australia through the Australian government’s offshore humanitarian entrant program, while others have joined through family reunion programs. Our community has emerged from the shadows of a 14-year civil conflict in Liberia, which inflicted deep scars on our society—destroying lives, infrastructure, and social stability. This conflict has left many with unhealable wounds and traumas, as well as a diminished sense of belonging.

This influx has significantly increased the number of Liberians residing in the region, contributing to a more vibrant community.
  2. Family Reunification: The program includes provisions for family reunification, which has allowed Liberian families to be reunited after years of separation due to conflict and displacement. This has strengthened familial bonds and provided emotional support for new arrivals.
  3. Cultural Integration: As new members join the community through the humanitarian program, they bring their cultural heritage, enriching the multicultural landscape of South Australia. This integration promotes cultural exchange and understanding among diverse communities.
  4. Support Services: The arrival of humanitarian entrants has led to the establishment of various support services tailored to assist Liberians in their transition to life in Australia. Organizations like LICOSA provide resources for education, employment, and social integration, helping newcomers navigate their new environment.
  5. Community Development: The growth of the Liberian community through the offshore humanitarian program has fostered a sense of solidarity and collective identity among its members. Community events and cultural celebrations have become more frequent, promoting unity and pride in their heritage.
  6. Advocacy and Representation: With an increasing population, there is a stronger voice for advocacy on issues affecting Liberians in South Australia. The community can better represent its interests and needs in discussions with local government and service providers.

Overall, the offshore humanitarian entrant program has been instrumental in shaping the Liberian community in South Australia, providing opportunities for safety, growth, and cultural preservation amidst challenges faced by its members.
